Beat Invisible Glaucoma!

BEAT INVISIBLE GLAUCOMA

GLAUCOMA is a group of eye diseases that progressively and gradually damages the optic nerve of the eye, resulting in irreversible blindness or vision loss. This condition is generally caused by (or associated with) consistently increased eye pressure in the affected eye. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, with about 6 million Nigerians living with glaucoma currently.

Glaucoma may present in various forms – the more common type of glaucoma known as primary open-angle glaucoma, is associated with a poor draining of the fluid in the eye, causing pressure to build up and gradual damage of the optic nerve. This type of glaucoma is painless and causes no apparent vision at first, thus many who are afflicted with it are unaware till irreversible damage on the optic nerve is already done. Another type of glaucoma occurs when the pressure in the eye suddenly and quickly builds up due to a gradual block in the fluid outflow channels in the eye. This presents as an eye emergency with so much pain and discomfort. Unfortunately, vision loss due to glaucoma cannot be regained. The good news is this: blindness caused by glaucoma CAN BE PREVENTED; this is possible through early detection during eye/glaucoma screenings or routine eye examinations.

A number of risk factors have been associated with glaucoma; these include African descent, above 40 years of age, family history of glaucoma, a traumatic eye/head injury, diabetes, hypertension and very high refractive prescription. It is advisable that people, who are exposed to any/all of the mentioned risk factors, seek professional care and participate in the glaucoma assessments. Glaucoma tests are generally painless and take little time.

Glaucoma an only be managed through the use of medications and surgery aimed at regulating the eye pressure. Early detection is vital. If you are already living with glaucoma, you can co-operate with your doctor to ensure that your remaining vision is sustained by adherence to your prescribed drug regimen, routine and frequent follow-up assessments as well as adopting healthy lifestyles. What do I do?

It will be worthwhile to seize the opportunity during the upcoming World Glaucoma Week, March 10 – March 17, 2019, to know your status in relation to glaucoma, especially when you are exposed to any of the afore-mentioned risk factors. Ensure to be screened!

Could my phone be hurting my eyes and vision?

You probably have a digital device – you are using one now! Just how exposed are your eyes to these digital gadgets?

The world is basically more digital now than ever before, with more and more tasks that were done in real time being done via these devices. More hours in the day are spent using/looking at these digital screens. the children are not left out of this development – social media, games, class work is done more now using these devices. However, studies show that the more  time spent on these screen/the more exposure the eyes have to these screens, the more effects they have on eye health and even good near vision.Could my Phone be affecting my eyes and vision?

What to do?

The most logical step would be to reduce screen time. Map out no-screen periods to enable the eye rest and reduce exposure to any damaging radiations/blue light. however, in cases where screen time is not negotiable, for instance if your job requires it of you, then our advice is this:

You must consult an Optometry doctor to have an eye assessment – this will reveal any unhealthy changes that may be found in your eye. This assessment will also reveal any problems with near vision and focusing, and then treatment plan can be proffered.

Finally, the eyes must always be protected whenever the digital device is to be used extensively. Computer glasses, protective eye wear are all available options that your Optometrist can provide for you.

Its a digital world now; stay safe – protect your eyes.

We recommend that you include  more of the eye-friendly foods in your diet this year.
Indulge your eyes with foods such as yellow corn, red grapes, sweet potatoes, oily fish, garlic spice, avocado pears, red ball peppers, walnuts (and other nuts), green tea, kale, spinach, carrots, etc…, any one that you have access to.
Your eyes will “thank” you for this.

Sugar, sugar …

A fluctuating visual status requires you to consult your Optometrist but could also be an indicator that you may need a sugar level test. Yes, your blood sugar levels can affect your eyes as well.
November 14th 2017, is the World Diabetes Day. We stand with all who are living with diabetes, reminding them to maintain healthy blood sugar levels and ensure to have their routine eye exams, as the condition contributes to compromising eye health and vision, including the risk of blindness!

Puffy Eyes?

Do you or a loved one experience puffy eyes (eye bags?) We can help you.
First you must ascertain that the eyes are just puffy and not swollen (medical attention is necessary if they are swollen). Puffiness is mostly due to accumulated fluid in the soft tissues around the eye and could be due to dehydration, much salt consumption, fatigue/poor sleep/crying, allergies, inherited facial features, among other factors.

Tip: you can reduce/eliminate the puffiness by drinking more water, reducing dietary salt intake, eating more of potassium-rich foods like bananas, frequent eye blinking, applying cold compress/cucumber slice/iced tea bags on the eyes. If due to allergies, comply with prescribed medication. You can also give us a call if you have enquiries:  08146999071, 08092355984.

We hope this helps.

This October, we join the eye care community world wide to mark WORLD SIGHT DAY on the 12th of October. As is our custom, we shall host FREE eye exams FOR ALL from Monday 9th to Saturday 14th October 2017, during the working hours.
